Default [RS.Com] Alice in Chains - Discography @ 320 KBPS

Alice in Chains is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1987 by guitarist Jerry Cantrell and vocalist Layne Staley. Although widely associated with grunge music, the band's sound incorporates heavy metal and acoustic elements. Since its formation, Alice in Chains has released three studio albums, three EPs, two live albums, four compilations, and two DVDs. The band is known for its distinct vocal style which often included the harmonized vocals of Staley and Cantrell.

Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. The band was one of the most successful music acts of the 1990s, selling over 17 million albums worldwide, including 14 million in the United States alone. The band achieved two number-one Billboard 200 albums (Jar of Flies and Alice in Chains), 11 top ten singles on the Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, and six Grammy Award nominations.

Although never officially disbanding, Alice in Chains was plagued by extended inactivity due to Layne Staley's problems with substance abuse, culminating in his death in 2002. Alice in Chains reunited in 2005 and as of 2009 have finished recording their first studio album in 14 years with new lead vocalist William DuVall. The album, Black Gives Way to Blue, is due for release on September 29, 2009 via Virgin/EMI.

Facelift

Facelift is the debut album by the grunge band Alice in Chains. The album was released on August 21, 1990. It was also the first grunge album to reach the top 50 in America on the Billboard 200, and second to Soundgarden's Louder Than Love to reach number 1 on Heatseekers, thanks mainly to the hit songs "We Die Young" and "Man in the Box". The album has been certified 2x platinum by the RIAA for sales of two million copies in the United States.

Sap EP

Sap is the second studio EP by the American grunge band Alice in Chains. It was released on February 4, 1992 through Columbia Records.

The album was re-released on March 21, 1995 when "Got Me Wrong" became a hit after its inclusion on the soundtrack to the 1994 movie Clerks. The re-released version included lyrics and slightly different artwork. The aforementioned song, as well as "Brother", was performed live during Alice in Chains' MTV Unplugged concert. Also of note is song "Right Turn", which features guest vocals by fellow Seattle grunge musicians, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Mark Arm of Mudhoney; as such, the song is credited to "Alice Mudgarden."

Jar of Flies EP

Jar of Flies is the third (and final thus far, as of 2009) studio EP, released on January 25, 1994, by the Seattle, Washington grunge band Alice in Chains through Columbia Records. Jar of Flies marks the first album with bassist Mike Inez. This album was the first EP ever to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 United States album chart, and was the only EP ever to gain this distinction until 2004, when a mashup EP by Jay-Z and Linkin Park titled Collision Course also achieved the #1 spot. The EP features Alice in Chains' most successful radio song and two more successful singles for the band. The song "No Excuses" was the only Alice in Chains song to reach the number 1 position on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. "I Stay Away" also reached high positions, and "Don't Follow" had become a modest hit by early 1995. The final single released from the EP was a bold offering for a grunge-oriented band; a promo of the string instrumental "Whale & Wasp" was released as a promo-only single in January 1995.

Unplugged

Unplugged is a live album and DVD by Alice in Chains. It was recorded at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Majestic Theatre as part of the MTV Unplugged series of concerts and contains live, acoustic versions of the band's songs. The show first aired on MTV on May 28, 1996. The performance was Alice in Chains' first concert in two and a half years, as well as one of the band's final appearances with Layne Staley. In addition to the CD, a full length DVD of the concert was also released.

The songs "Angry Chair," "Frogs," and "The Killer is Me" were cut from the original MTV broadcast but are included on both the CD and DVD releases.

It is often hailed as one of the most memorable editions of MTV Unplugged, with a reputation comparable to the famous editions featuring Nirvana, Eric Clapton, and Pearl Jam.

Mike Inez's bass has the phrase "Friends Don't Let Friends... Get Friends Haircuts" which the members of the band Metallica, whose members had recently cut their hair prior to the release of Load, thought was directed at them (all four then-members of Metallica were present for the show). The line was in fact just a Friends reference and the relation with Metallica's new haircuts was coincidental. Inez and drummer Sean Kinney did pay tribute to the band, however, playing the intro to Metallica's hit song "Enter Sandman" just before breaking in "Sludge Factory" (this can be heard on the CD and the DVD).

Layne Staley is visibly weak and emaciated and had problems singing at times, including stopping the song "Sludge Factory" due to forgetting the words. He was nevertheless received by the audience with loud applause.

The album was re-released as a CD/DVD package on September 18, 2007.
